CITES CoP 17 in Johannesburg

From 24 September to 5 October 2016 the 17thConference of the Parties to CITES (CoP17) took place in Johannesburg, South Africa. CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments which aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.

One year ago, on 1 July 2015, Cecil the Lion was killed by an American trophy hunter in Zimbabwe. Success for animal welfare: Australia bans the import of lion trophies

The Ministry of Environment officially stated to ban the import of lion parts including hunting trophies. We welcome the Australian initiative for a better protection of the African lion and call on the United States and the European Union to follow this example.
