Duki – a little dog survives toxic bait
It was a close escape from death for Duki: During a walk, the little Spanish dog ate a toxic bait.
Only five minutes after Duki left the car, his owner found him shivering and throwing up. The woman immediately took her beloved dog to a vet, where Duki received the necessary medical treatment in time. The quick treatment was decisive, as it can be a question of life and death. Fortunately, the little dog has fully recovered from the poison.
Unfortunately, most poison accidents do not have such a happy ending. Only very few animals can be saved from death by organic phosphates – the poison that is used for toxic baits. Information for pet owners In Spain, toxic baits are often used by hunters to kill predators which are seen as unwanted competitors. Apart from wild animals, many pets are victims of the toxic baits – a tragedy for humans and animals.
FOUR PAWS is supporting a project against toxic baits in Spain which concentrates on informing pet owners. With success: In the first half of 2009, the telephone hotline of the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF) received 300 calls.
