June 24th, 2010 Stop illegal puppy farming
The illegal business with puppies from Eastern Europe is booming: countless dogs are smuggled to destinations throughout Western Europe in car boots and boxes by ruthless traders. Once they arrive they are sold through the internet or classified ads. These ads claim the puppies are reared "with love" or "in a family environment".
The truth couldn’t be more different: Most of the puppies come from mass breeding farms in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. The animals are often torn from their mothers far too early and are seriously ill. The puppies are transported across Europe with forged papers. The authorities are almost powerless to stop or catch the puppy traders due to the open borders across the EU.
Dog lovers frequently buy the puppies out of sympathy, without realising that they are supporting the ruthless business of animal suffering. Many of the puppies die after a few days, as they are not vaccinated or de-wormed. If they do survive, they suffer all their lives. They are psychologically damaged and prone to illness. FOUR PAWS has launched an international campaign against puppy smuggling: We demand a Europe-wide mandatory registration of dogs and better border controls.
